The Athletic Trainers Guide to Acute and Emergency Care continuing education home study course is an invaluable resource for training and preparing initial responders to recognize critical situations and treat the acutely injured or ill patient. Athletic trainers are often the first ones on the scene when an individual sustains an acute injury. Therefore, knowing how to assess injuries and illnesses and begin treatment quickly is of vital importance for aspiring athletic trainers. The Athletic Trainers Guide to Acute and Emergency Care teaches trainers how to recognize and manage emergency conditions so they can provide appropriate patient care between the field and the emergency department. Learning aids include case studies that offer practical scenarios that will facilitate critical thinking and decision-making skills.  Decision-making algorithms and decision trees lead students through selecting the most appropriate treatment option based on a patient’s signs and symptoms.  With a full-color presentation and more than 280 photos and illustrations, this course takes a systematic approach to acute and emergency care, with the content divided into two parts. Part I provides critical information on prevention and risk management strategies, including developing an emergency action plan, conducting an emergency examination, and administering emergency medications. Part II then provides the basics of emergency evaluations, describing how to examine, treat, and manage common acute injuries and illnesses to limit the severity of these potentially life-threatening conditions.

Athletic training programs of all levels can benefit from this content that addresses the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) educational competencies relating to immediate management of acute injuries and illnesses to physically active people. While athletic training curricula include examination of musculoskeletal and medical conditions, this program specifically addresses the patient care that is provided between the field and the emergency department. These areas of prehospital health care have been previously addressed in the literature in the form of position statements, consensus statements, and interassociation proclamations. However, until now, they have not been available in a comprehensive text for the prehospital care of the patient who is injured or ill.

The text this program is based on is a significant addition to the literature as an interprofessional resource describing the most up-to-date information available in the medical literature. In the spirit of interprofessional collaborative practice, evidence from a variety of health care professions was consulted in the writing of each chapter. Drawing from the literature in the emergency response system, paramedic training, and emergency medicine resources, this text is the first to comprehensively review the literature for the most current evidence to support clinical practice. In addition to position and consensus statements from the NATA and other professional organizations, this text provides more review of the literature and application to practice. This text specifically focuses on the competencies identified in the CAATE 2020 standards and the new skills and techniques ATs must be prepared to use in an emergency situation.

Course Objectives

  1. Explain how and why effective teamwork involves using best practices.
  2. Identify the appropriate precautions to minimize risk and prevent medical errors.
  3. Develop a plan to provide acute or emergency care and transfer care of the patient to emergency medical services (EMS) or next-level provider should a life-threatening injury or illness occur.
  4. Identify the keys to an effective emergency examination including following a routine, systematic approach that allows for a consistent and appropriate decision-making process.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of emergency medication administration methods and techniques for use by the AT in the prehospital setting.
  6. Utilize what you have learned for immediate management of common acute injuries and illnesses applying the basic concepts of the emergency examination, identifying a chief complaint, monitoring and reassessing the patient as emergency medical services arrive, and handing the patient off to the next level of care.
