Description
The American College of Sports Medicine’s Professional Education Committee certifies that “American Academy of Health and Fitness” meets the criteria for official ACSM Approved Provider status from 2017 – December 2021– Providership # 817430.
In contrast to a more traditional structural view, the Janda approach is functional—emphasizing the importance of the sensorimotor system in controlling movement and chronic musculoskeletal pain syndromes from sports and general activities.
This continuing education home study course is based on the textbook Assessment and Treatment of Muscle Imbalance: The Janda Approach, which is the only text to offer practical, evidence-based application of Janda’s theories.
The step-by-step Janda system of evaluation is explained—including analysis of posture, balance, and gait; evaluation of movement patterns; testing of muscle length; and assessment of the soft tissue.
The program explores treatment options for muscle imbalance through facilitation and inhibition techniques and sensorimotor training to restore neuromuscular function.
This course combines theory, evidence, and applications to assist health care providers in treating patients with musculoskeletal complaints as well as health, fitness and exercise professionals in developing appropriate exercise prescription and training programs.
Certified health and fitness professionals holding more than one certification may obtain CECs/CEUS for all approved certification organizations (see list above) for which they need continuing education at no additional cost.
* The textbook for this program is the 312-page Assessment and Treatment of Muscle Imbalance by Phillip Page, Clare Frank and Robert Lardner is NOT included and must be purchased separately via Amazon or another book retailer.

Course Objectives
Upon succesfully completing this program, you will be able to:
- Distinguish between the structural and functional approaches to muscle imbalance and explain the structure and function of the sensorimotor system.
- Identify the articular, muscular, and fascial chains and their role in functional movement.
- Explain the pathology of musculoskeletal pain, weakness, and imbalance.
- Describe the processes used for the functional evaluation and analyses of posture, balance, and gait.
- Identify Janda’s six basic movement patterns and corresponding evaluation tests.
- Explain the purpose and technique used for muscle length testing as well as the process of soft-tissue assessment and the characteristics of trigger points.
- Discuss why peripheral structures are treated and techniques for bringing about peripheral changes.
- Identify factors leading to muscle weakness and the recommended Janda treatments.
- Discuss the pathology, assessment, and recommended treatment for cervical pain syndromes, upper-extremity and lower-extremity pain syndromes and lumbar pain syndromes.
